What is Wattle?

Wattle means make, enclose or fill up and is used as a way to describe a building technique. Wattles were flexible twigs or small branches interwoven to form the framework of buildings. It felt representative as people within a company and the importance of relationships to form the foundation, stability and eventually growth of a company.

The Golden Wattle is also Australia’s National Floral Emblem, which is where I’m from. It is a symbol of unity and diversity, both crucial elements and values of a strong company. I wanted to create a company that also represented my core values and it seemed like the perfect fit.

Why did you build Wattle?

I wanted to launch Wattle as a way to give companies more flexibility and experiment with new ideas within the people space. People strategy and operations has always been seen as a cost center and adding headcount within the human resources team is a struggle. As such, employees in this space are expected to know how to do everything. By providing freelance on demand talent, companies can more easily implement new initiatives and find the exact expertise that they need, when they need it. 

I also want to find more opportunities for talent within the People space so they can work on flexible freelance projects, explore new ways of thinking and take more ownership over their lives. Folks are passionate and experts on specialty areas within people strategy and operations whether it’d be diversity and inclusion, leadership coaching, employee engagement and more, this gives them an avenue to work with clients across industries on their expertise.

This is only the start of Wattle, Our mission is to be the destination for people strategy and operations for founders, leaders and employees as they build, grow and evolve a sustainable company. Our vision is to deliver happier and more engaged people as a key enabler to achieve their dreams.

How does the process work?

If you are interested in working with a talent, submit a form here to tell us a bit more about your needs. We’ll setup time to chat through your requirements and goals. After that, we’ll look through our network to find a talent for you within 48 hours.

Once we have matched you with a talent, we’ll set-up a 30-minute intro call at no cost to ensure there is the right fit on both sides. We will check in with you regularly to ensure there is ongoing feedback and support. At the end of the engagement, we will organize a proper review session - at this stage, there should be no surprises and hopefully everyone involved is happy.

What if I'm not satisfied with the talent?

It is extremely important for us to ensure you have the best experience throughout the entire engagement. If you are not satisfied with the talent that we match you with, we are here to support you! We will understand the problem and see if there is anything that can be rectified. If not, then we will re-match you with someone new. We value your feedback and will make sure we find you the best fit possible. 

How much does it cost?

The cost of the expert will depend on the type of work, experience, location and duration. As part of the process, we will work closely with you to determine the right engagement based on the scope, budget, geography and expertise. Note that we do not charge any recruiting fees, and there are no long-term contracts, hidden or termination fees. 

Where does the talent work?

Our talent generally either works from home or at a co-working space. We understand there may be situations that would require the talent to go to the office for workshops or facilitation etc. If that is the case, we will agree upon a travel policy prior to starting any engagement.

Can the talent work from our office?

Since our talent comes from everywhere, most of our engagements are generally remote. If this is a requirement, we will try and find a freelancer that is based in your geography or find a way for the talent to travel.

How do you screen the talent in your network?

Every freelancer application is reviewed based on their quality, length and depth of experience. We do a preliminary phone screen for relevant applications to determine subject matter expertise, communication skills, and professionalism. 

After the preliminary screen, we vet each candidate with a more detailed video interview to dive deeper into their specific skills, approach and prior experience.

Most of our talent only qualify for subject matter expertise. Only candidates that pass all parts of the interview will be accepted into the network. Clients will have an opportunity to review talent after each engagement, if we get more than two unsatisfactory ratings for the talent then the talent will not be part of our network anymore.
